Special Events - Always something to do.
There are a variety of activities that take place at Elcor-from our own extensive social and recreational schedule, to entertainment and educational events offered by community groups. These festivities help create the home-like, family atmosphere of Elcor. Activities may also be arranged in resident's rooms for people more comfortable in a personal setting. Religious services are held weekly and during religious holidays.
Planned Excursions for people on the go!
Cruising along Seneca Lake on Captain Bill's . . . and other cultural events keep residents busy and in touch with the community. Lunch clubs going to area restaurants . . . trips to the ball park . . . shopping at the mall . . . all are a part of life at Elcor!
Continuing Education Classes Sharing experiences and knowledge with friends
Community members with special interests volunteer their time to teach various courses at Elcor. Course work has included Chemung County History, The Art of Folklore and African Culture, Poetry Writing, Ceramics, and many more. Resident participation has been great and the Activities Department continues to make residents aware of up-coming courses.
Big Band
When you visit Elcor, you will hear the sounds of music and instrument playing coming from unit dining rooms and will observe smiles and laughter coming from the residents. This is Big Band in action. This exciting new program was designed by Ann Marie Bradley of Dementia Solutions to provide social interaction and enjoyment for residents with middle stage dementia; those that don’t normally do well in traditional activity programs.
We start each Big Band session by welcoming the residents and asking them to choose an instrument. The stereo then gets cranked up with such musical favorites as “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”, “Baby Face” and “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”. Four facilitators encourage residents to sing, clap their hands, tap their feet or play an instrument…any resident interaction is a success. The old-time music taps into residents’ intact long term memories, allowing them to recall their personal history and feel successful, useful and wanted.
Companion Radio
Available to everyone at anytime. All four stations (Serenity, Reminiscence, Imagination and Potpourri) operate 365 days a year. Music from the 30s, 40s and 50s and old time radio shows are broadcast daily. While at Elcor, entertainment, comfort and companionship are always near.
